Mechanical Engineering Alumnus Received The Engineering School Alumni Associations Highest Honor

Dr. Guy Longobardo, B.S. '49, M.S. '50, Eng.Sc.D. '62, a graduate of Columbia Mechanical Engineering and former Professor in the Department, was honored by the Columbia Engineering School Alumni Association at its Annual Awards Dinner on November 15, 2006, with the Egleston Medal. This award is the highest honor bestowed by Alumni Association and is awarded annually in recognition of distinguished achievements in engineering.


For over four decades, Dr. Longobardo, has applied quantifiable engineering principles such as, conservation of mass, fluid mechanics, and automatic control theory to advance the field of bio-engineering. His contributions lead to a better understanding of the process of normal and unstable breathing by human beings in various physiological and pathological situations. Dr. Longobardo’s interdisciplinary approach provided novel insights about the workings of the human body. During his career, Dr. Longobardo has served as a bio-engineering consultant to several universities. He has authored more than 50 research papers, book chapters, reviews and abstracts in professional journals, and his research is still continuing.


Dr. Longobardo has been active in the Columbia Engineering School Alumni Association, serving as president from 1988 to 1990 and continues as a member of the Board of Managers to the present. He was honored by the University as a recipient of the Alumni Medal of the Columbia Alumni Federation in 1989.
